firsts for jace

our little guy jace has had a rough couple of weeks. it started out with his very first stomach virus. he was sick for about four days and learned very quickly that throwing up is no fun.

after he got better from that his allergies hit him in full force. runny nose, coughing, itchy eyes...he had it all. the allergies turned into his very first ear infection.

and while on vacation this week, he had his very first stitches. it was the first day that he was going to get to swim and hike and play. poor kid. i guess it was just a month for not-so-fun firsts.

the story of the stitches:
thursday morning jace hoped in the very big bathtub at the hotel. it was practically a swimming pool for him. it was finally warm enough that day to go swimming. jace was looking forward to playing in the pool, getting a yummy treat and going on a hike with grandma.

when it was time to get out of the bath i grabbed one of the glasses on the counter to wash the shampoo out of his hair. he wanted to pour some water on his head too so i handed over the glass. when he was setting the glass on the edge of the bathtub (which is about at his shoulders) it slipped, hit the edge of the tub, shattered into the water and sliced his leg just above the knee cap.

i grabbed him out of the bathtub, wrapped him in a towel and headed to the urgent care in park city. his cut was about 5 cm long and 2 cm wide. it didn't bleed much but you could see his muscle. because he would need some anesthesia for the stitches, urgent care wrapped his leg and sent us to primary children's medical center.

he was pretty calm during the whole ordeal as long as he didn't see his leg. he said it didn't hurt much and that a band aid would be just fine. but the doctor told him she needed to sew him up. they hooked up to all kinds of monitoring devices and put an iv in for the anesthesia. they gave him a stuffed dolphin to snuggle with.

the anesthesia was supposed to put him out for the whole time but he metabolized it too fast and he woke up before they were done numbing the leg. they gave him some more and he was out for about 15 minutes longer and then awake for the rest of the procedure.

he was pretty funny after he woke up. he was singing songs to the nurses and telling stories. he told about the three little pigs except his wolf jumped on the house instead of blowing them down. he would talk into the oxygen mask like it was a microphone and then he used it like a phone and even told us what his phone number was. everyone got a pretty good laugh out of him.

he ended up with 7 stitches inside and 16 stitches on top. he told me that he has spiders in his legs now. he isn't supposed to move around much for a few days which is not easy for a two year old. today it is starting to hurt and much to his dismay, he can't go swimming for two weeks.

Ugh.

Poor Jace! And what a brave little guy. Brave you, too. I seriously would have passed out.

My greatest fear is having to take one of my kids to Urgent Care or the Emergency room! Hope Jace has a quick recovery and isn't in too much pain! Poor kid!
